چکیده

Four studies investigated the proposal that in the context of an elite university, individuals from relatively lower socioeconomic (SES) backgrounds possess a stigmatized identity and, as such, experience (a) concerns regarding their academic fit and (b) self-regulatory depletion as a result of managing these concerns. Study 1, a correlational study, revealed the predicted associations between SES, concerns about academic fit, and self-regulatory strength. Results from Studies 2 and 3 suggested that self-presentation involving the academic domain is depleting for lower (but not higher) SES students: After a self-presentation task about academic achievement, lower SES students consumed more candy (Study 2) and exhibited poorer Stroop performance (Study 3) relative to their higher SES peers; in contrast, the groups did not differ after discussing a nonacademic topic (Study 3). Study 4 revealed the potential for eliminating the SES group difference in depletion via a social comparison manipulation. Taken together, these studies support the hypothesis that managing concerns about marginality can have deleterious consequences for self-regulatory resources.

‘Ordinary, the Same as Anywhere Else’: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity in ‘Marginal’ Middle- Class Neighbourhoods

Urban sociologists are becoming increasingly interested in neighbourhood as a source of middle-class identity. However, there has been a dearth of work on ‘marginal’ middle-class neighbourhoods that are si...

Effect of Three Light Curing Protocols and Load Cycling on Microleakage of Class V Composite Restorations

Objective: Different methods have been suggested to overcome the polymerization shrinkage of composite restorations. Changing the light curing protocol to improve polymerization by using new light curing units is among these methods. The new devices are more efficient, portable and durable and produce less heat. This study aimed to assess the marginal microleakage of class V composite restora...

Internal and Marginal Fit of Modern Indirect Class II Composite Inlays

Introduction: This in vitro study investigates the marginal and internal fit of indirect class II composite restorations. Two different processes for chair-side restorations were compared. In group A, the restorations were fabricated using CAD/CAM technology (Cerec, Sirona, Germany, Bernsheim) and in group B they were made by hand (GrandioSO Inlay System, VOCO GmbH, Germany, Cuxhaven). Methods:...

Microleakage comparison of three types of adhesive systems versus GIC-based adhesive in class V composite restorations

Background and aims: New dentin bonding agents and techniques have been developed to reduce microleakage and create higher bond strength. This in-vitro study compared the microleakage of three resin-based adhesives versus a GIC-based adhesive on class V composite restorations.  Materials and Methods: Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surfaces of 72 sound premolars, randomly assigned ...
